Expert Tip

Keeping your dog at an ideal Body Condition Score (BCS) can add up to 2.5 years to their life expectancy. Obesity is the leading preventable cause of early mortality in dogs.

Calculation Methodology & Details

๐Ÿ“

Formula

Average Lifespan = Breed Size Base Lifespan Remaining Expectancy = Max(Base - Current Age, 0.5)

Dog size categories correlate strongly with average longevity: Small breeds average 14-16 years, Medium 12-14 years, Large 10-12 years, and Giant breeds 8-10 years. If a dog exceeds this age, their remaining life expectancy is dynamically calculated at a minimum of 0.5 years.

How to Estimate Dog Life Expectancy: Step-by-Step

Estimate your companion's lifespan using size and age criteria:

1

Determine Breed Size Category

Select the category matching your dog's final adult weight.

2

Compare Base Lifespan Values

Large breeds experience higher cell-division stress and wear out earlier in calendar years than small dogs.

3

Calculate Remaining Years

Subtract current age from the base. Aging is non-linear, so healthy senior dogs frequently exceed their base expectancy.
