Equivalent Human Age
Expert Tip
Small dog breeds mature faster in their first year but age much slower thereafter. Large breeds mature slower initially but age rapidly from age 5 onwards.
Calculation Methodology & Details
Formula
The traditional "1 dog year = 7 human years" is a myth. The standard size-adjusted formula assigns 15 years for the first year, 9 years for the second, and then adds 4 (small), 5 (medium), 6 (large), or 7-8 (giant) years annually.

How to Calculate Dog Age in Human Years: Step-by-Step
Determine your dog's human equivalent age with these steps:
Classify by Weight
Categorize your dog into Small (under 20 lbs), Medium (20-50 lbs), Large (50-90 lbs), or Giant (90+ lbs).
Set First Two Years
Year 1 is equal to 15 human years. Year 2 adds 9 years, totaling 24 human years.
Add Annual Size Increments
For each year past 2, add 4 years for small dogs, 5 for medium, 6 for large, and 7-8 for giant breeds.
