Total Quality of Life Score
Expert Tip
A total score of 35 or higher suggests that keeping your dog comfortable at home with palliative care is reasonable. If the score falls below 35, talk to your vet about end-of-life options.
Calculation Methodology & Details
Formula
Calculated using the Alice Villalobos HHHHHMM Quality of Life scale. Each parameter is rated from 0 (very poor) to 10 (excellent). The threshold for an acceptable quality of life is 35 points.

How to Evaluate Quality of Life: Step-by-Step
Assess your dog's palliative status objectively with this flow:
Evaluate pain and distress
Determine if pain is controlled by medication and if the dog can breathe normally.
Assess food and fluid intake
Is the dog eating and drinking enough? Is dehydration present?
Log good days vs bad days
Count the days of comfort. When bad days exceed good ones, quality of life has severely deteriorated.
