Centrifugation RCF to RPM Converter
Convert centrifugation protocols from RPM to g-force (RCF) or vice versa. Centrifuge results are only reproducible when using RCF due to different rotor radii.
Centrifuge Configuration
Specify rotor radius, input value, and conversion direction.
Relative Centrifugal Force (RCF)
* Based on a rotor radius of 150 mm.
Expert Tip
Always publish centrifugation protocols in g-force (RCF), not RPM. Centrifuging at 3000 RPM in a benchtop microcentrifuge yields a vastly different force than in a large floor centrifuge.
Methodology & Equations
The Conversion Equations
RCF and RPM are linked via the rotor radius (rcm in centimeters):
What is RCF vs RPM?
RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) is simply the speed at which the rotor rotates.
RCF (Relative Centrifugal Force) is the actual force exerted on the contents of the tubes (relative to Earth's gravity). Because it factors in the radius of the rotation path, RCF is the only objective measurement of centrifugation force.
How to Convert Centrifugation RCF (g) to RPM
Relate centrifuge rotational speed to actual gravitation forces using the rotor radius:
Measure Rotor Radius (r)
Measure the distance from the center spindle to the bottom of the tube bucket in millimeters (mm).
Calculate RCF from RPM
Use the formula: RCF (g) = 1.118 × 10^-6 × r × (RPM)^2.
Calculate RPM from RCF
Use the formula: RPM = sqrt(RCF / (1.118 × 10^-6 × r)).
