Cell Dilution Calculator
Quickly calculate the amount of stock cell suspension and diluent needed to prepare a target concentration and volume for cell seeding or subculturing.
Dilution Parameters
Input your stock concentration, desired concentration, and target volume.
Volume of Stock Cell Culture (Vโ)
* Add this amount of stock cell suspension.
Expert Tip
Mix the stock culture thoroughly before pipetting to ensure uniform cell distribution. Clumped cells will cause highly inaccurate dilutions.
Methodology & Dilution Equation
Dilution Equation (CโVโ = CโVโ)
Cell dilution relies on the basic conservation of mass formula. The total number of cells remains constant after dilution:
Preparation Protocol
To prepare your target solution:
- 1. Pipette the calculated stock volume (Vโ) into a sterile tube.
- 2. Add the calculated volume of diluent (media or PBS) to reach the final volume (Vโ).
How to Perform Cell Culture Dilutions
Diluting a cell culture to a specific density is crucial for cell seeding and maintenance. Follow this guide:
Specify Current and Target Concentrations
Note your starting cell density (C1) and your desired final density (C2).
Define Final Volume
Determine the total volume of diluted cells you need (V2).
Calculate Volumes Using C1 × V1 = C2 × V2
The stock volume needed is V1 = (C2 × V2) / C1. The volume of diluent (medium/buffer) to add is V2 - V1.
