Water Potential (Ψ)

-2.90 bars
Solute potential (Ψs): -4.90 bars.
In Megapascals: -0.29 MPa

Expert Tip

Water potential flows from higher (less negative) values to lower (more negative) values. Soil usually has values close to 0, while dry air is highly negative.

Calculation Methodology & Details

๐Ÿ“

Formula

Solute Potential (Ψs) = -i × C × R × T Water Potential (Ψ) = Ψp + Ψs

C is molar concentration, i is ionization, R is pressure constant (0.0831 liter bars / mole K), and T is absolute temperature (celsius + 273.15). 1 bar = 0.1 MPa.

How to Compute Water Potential

Follow these steps to calculate osmotic plant parameters:

1

Determine Molarity

Measure the solute concentration of the plant fluid.

2

Identify Ionization

Select 1.0 for non-ionizing sucrose or 2.0 for salts like NaCl.

3

Measure Turgor Pressure

Measure the physical pressure potential inside the plant cells.
