Expert Tip

Cats cannot convert prednisone to prednisolone efficiently in their liver. Therefore, vets prescribe prednisolone. Felines require higher doses than dogs due to lower glucocorticoid receptor density.

Calculation Methodology & Details

๐Ÿ“

Formula

Anti-Inflammatory Dose (mg) = Weight (kg) × (1.0 to 2.0) Immunosuppressive Dose (mg) = Weight (kg) × (4.0 to 8.0)

Cats require significantly higher steroid doses than dogs. Physiologic doses are 1-2 mg/kg, and autoimmune diseases require heavy suppression at 4-8 mg/kg daily.

How to Calculate Prednisolone Dosing

Determine feline steroid levels using these parameters:

1

Determine Weight in kg

Obtain weight. Divide pounds by 2.20462 if needed.

2

Select Clinical Protocol

Choose anti-inflammatory (1-2 mg/kg) or immunosuppressive (4-8 mg/kg) depending on the case.

3

Determine Tablet Portion

Divide computed mg limits by tablet strength (1 mg, 5 mg, or 20 mg).
