Recommended Crate Dimensions
Expert Tip
A crate should be large enough for your dog to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably, but not too large, or house-training benefits are lost.
Calculation Methodology & Details
Formula
Crate sizing ensures the dog has 4 inches of clearance above its head when standing, and 4 inches of clearance from nose to tail base when lying flat.

How to Size a Dog Crate: Step-by-Step
Measure and size your dog's crate correctly with these steps:
Measure Nose to Tail Base
Measure length while the dog is standing on all fours. Do not include the full tail.
Measure Head to Floor
Measure height from the top of the dog's head or ears to the floor.
Add Clearance Margin
Add 4 inches (10 cm) to both length and height. Calculate width as 3/4 of the crate length.
