Input Parameters

Enter details for calculation.

Daily Energy Requirement (DER)

850 kcal/day
Resting Energy (RER): 530 kcal

Expert Tip

Adjust calorie intake based on body condition. A dog with visible ribs needs more food, while a dog with no visible waist needs fewer calories.

Calculation Methodology & Details

๐Ÿ“

Formula

RER = 70 × (Weight in kg)^0.75 DER = RER × Activity Factor

The Resting Energy Requirement (RER) is the energy needed to perform basic life functions at rest. The Daily Energy Requirement (DER) scales RER to account for physical activity and metabolic state.

How to Calculate Dog Calories: Step-by-Step

Follow this method to find daily caloric targets:

1

Determine Weight in kg

Obtain weight. If in lbs, divide by 2.205.

2

Calculate Resting Energy (RER)

Raise the weight in kg to the power of 0.75, then multiply by 70: RER = 70 × (kg)^0.75.

3

Determine Activity Factor

Select factor: 1.2 for weight loss, 1.6 for neutered adult, 1.8 for intact, and 2-3 for active/working or growing pups.
