Expert Tip

Cats are significantly more sensitive to theobromine than dogs. White chocolate contains almost no theobromine, but cocoa powder and baking chocolate are extremely dangerous.

Calculation Methodology & Details

๐Ÿ“

Formula

Theobromine (mg) = Chocolate (g) × Concentration Factor Dose per kg = Theobromine (mg) / Weight (kg)

The concentration factors are: White: 0.01 mg/g, Milk: 2 mg/g, Dark: 5.5 mg/g, Baker's: 16 mg/g, Cocoa powder: 26 mg/g. Symptoms appear around 20 mg/kg, and severe cardiotoxic effects occur over 40 mg/kg.

How to Calculate Chocolate Toxicity: Step-by-Step

Evaluate safety limits using these steps:

1

Identify Weight and Amount

Obtain weight in kg, and convert chocolate ounces to grams (1 oz = 28.35 g) if needed.

2

Compute Total Ingested Theobromine

Multiply the mass in grams by the concentration multiplier for the specific chocolate type.

3

Determine Danger Level

Compare the mg/kg dosage to toxicity thresholds (Mild @ 20 mg/kg, Severe @ 40 mg/kg).
