Expert Tip

Planting bulbs in a triangular layout provides a more natural, dense, and fuller appearance in the spring compared to a rigid grid pattern.

Calculation Methodology & Details

๐Ÿ“

Formula

Grid Bulbs = Math.floor(Length / Spacing) × Math.floor(Width / Spacing) Triangular Bulbs = Math.floor(Length / Spacing) × Math.floor(Width / (Spacing × 0.866))

For triangular spacing, the vertical row spacing is reduced by a factor of sqrt(3)/2 (~0.866) to offset alternating rows. This yields roughly 15.5% more planting density.

How to Determine Bulb Quantities

Follow these steps to calculate requirements:

1

Measure Bed

Measure the length and width of the garden bed area.

2

Select Spacing

Look up the spacing recommendations for your specific bulb (typically 4-6 inches for tulips).

3

Choose Pattern

Choose a grid pattern for straight rows or triangular for a dense massing.
