Expert Tip

Deciduous trees generally support greater leaf surface area index per unit of crown radius than conifers, but conifers retain leaves longer, resulting in different carbon profiles.

Calculation Methodology & Details

๐Ÿ“

Formula

Biomass: M_leaf (kg) = a ร— DBH^(b) (cm) Leaf Count = 1000 ร— M_leaf / LeafMass Crown: Area = ฯ€ ร— Rยฒ ร— LAI Leaf Count = Area / LeafArea

For the biomass method: Hardwood uses a = 0.045, b = 1.9. Softwood uses a = 0.032, b = 1.75. DBH is internally converted from inches to cm as required by allometric forestry models.

How Leaves are Estimated

Foliage density is estimated using two standardized models:

1

Choose Method

Select Biomass Allometry (DBH) for trunk-based estimates or Crown Dimensions (LAI) for canopy analysis.

2

Input Measurements

Provide either the trunk diameter (DBH) or the crown radius and leaf area index.

3

Check Foliage Mass

The tool calculates both total leaf count and absolute foliage mass or canopy area.
