Expert Tip

For best accuracy with the trigonometry method, stand at a distance roughly equal to the estimated height of the tree.

Calculation Methodology & Details

Formula

Trigonometric: Height = Distance ร— (tan(ฮธ_top) - tan(ฮธ_bottom)) Stick Method: Height = (StickLength / ArmLength) ร— Distance

Angle to base is subtracted. If looking down to the base, ฮธ_bottom is negative, making -tan(ฮธ_bottom) positive, which adds the eye height. Make sure angles are measured in degrees.

How to Measure Tree Height

Methods to calculate tree height without physical access:

1

Choose Method

Select Trigonometric if you have an inclinometer, or Stick method if you only have a ruler/stick.

2

Record Distance & Angles

Measure the distance to the base. Note angles to top and bottom, or arm/stick ratio.

3

Obtain Height

The tool performs trigonometric or intercept calculations instantly.
