Actual MOI

1.0
Poisson distribution probabilities:
  • Uninfected cells: 36.8%
  • Cells with 1 virus: 36.8%
  • Multiple infections: 26.4%
💡

Expert Tip

MOI represents the ratio of viral particles to target cells. Actual infection rate follows a Poisson distribution: at MOI = 1, ~36.8% of cells remain uninfected.

Calculation Methodology & Details

📐

Formula

MOI = Total Virus Particles (PFU) / Total Host Cells where Total Cells = Concentration × Volume, PFU = Titer × Volume

For Poisson probability P(k) = (e^(-MOI) * MOI^k) / k! where k represents the number of viruses infective on a single cell.

How to Calculate MOI

Steps to compute MOI or required stock viral volumes:

1

Choose Mode

Select whether to calculate actual MOI or required virus stock volume.

2

Enter counts

Input cell concentration, suspension volume, and viral stock titer.

3

Evaluate Poisson

Analyze the percentage of cells that will receive zero, one, or multiple viral particles.
