Growing Degree Units

20 GDUs
Accumulation for this single 24-hour period.
💡

Expert Tip

Corn growth is closely linked to daily GDU accumulation. Standard hybrid corn requires around 1200 GDUs to silking and 2700 GDUs to full grain maturity.

Calculation Methodology & Details

📐

Formula

GDU = ((Adjusted Max Temp + Adjusted Min Temp) / 2) - Base Temp

MaxTemp is capped at the Upper Cutoff, and MinTemp is set to BaseTemp if it drops below it. This models biological activity bounds where extreme heat or cold stalls growth.

How to Calculate Growing Degree Units

Follow these steps to calculate GDU values:

1

Record Daily Temperatures

Obtain the high and low temperatures for the day.

2

Apply Plant Thresholds

Adjust temperatures to match base (usually 50°F / 10°C) and cutoff limits.

3

Average and Subtract

Calculate average adjusted temperature, and subtract base temperature.
