Expert Tip

Cephalic index is widely used in medicine, anthropology, and pediatrics to track cranial development and detect conditions like craniosynostosis.

Calculation Methodology & Details

๐Ÿ“

Formula

Cephalic Index = (Head Width / Head Length) ร— 100

Dolichocephalic is defined as CI โ‰ค 75.9 (long, narrow head shape). Mesocephalic falls between 76.0 and 80.9 (average head shape). Brachycephalic is defined as CI โ‰ฅ 81.0 (broad, short head shape).

How to Determine Head Shapes

Steps to classify cranial measurements:

1

Measure Head Width

Obtain maximum width of head above ears (Biparietal diameter, BPD).

2

Measure Head Length

Measure length from glabella (between eyebrows) to furthest back point (OFD).

3

Find Index & Class

Divide width by length and multiply by 100 to determine shape classification.
