Expert Tip

A healthy FBMI ranges between 15 and 30. Cats with a score above 30 are considered overweight and are at a significantly higher risk for feline diabetes.

Calculation Methodology & Details

๐Ÿ“

Formula

FBMI = (((Rib Cage / 0.7062) - Leg Length) / 0.9156) - Leg Length

Calculates the proportional body fat index of domestic felines using the rib cage circumference and lower leg length (limbs to torso ratio). Healthy range is 15 to 29.9.

How to Calculate Feline BMI (FBMI)

Measure and calculate your cat's body score with these steps:

1

Measure the Rib Cage

Wrap a soft tape measure around the cat's chest at the 9th rib.

2

Measure the Leg Length

Measure the leg from the knee (patella) to the heel bone (calcaneus) in cm.

3

Evaluate the FBMI Score

Score under 15 indicates underweight, 15-30 is ideal, and over 30 is overweight.
