Formula

Shannon H' = - Σ p_i × ln(p_i) where p_i = n_i / N Evenness E = H' / ln(S) Simpson D = Σ n_i(n_i - 1) / [N(N - 1)]

Shannon index evaluates both species richness and relative abundance. Evenness shows how close in numbers each species is. Simpson's index of diversity represents the probability that two randomly selected individuals belong to different species.
